H.R. Giger was born in Chur, Switzerland, and studied industrial design and architecture in Zurich at the School of Applied Art.
The design for the Alien franchise's xenomorphs was based on his painting, "Necronom IV." The design earned him an Academy Award in 1980 for Visual Effects. He also contributed creature designs to Species and the Japanese fantasy film. Tokyo: The Last Megalopolis.
His style is often referred to as "Biomechanical".
