An admirer of artists Leonard Starr, Johnny Hart and writer Roy Thomas. He attended the High School of Arts and Design in Manhattan. He briefly worked at DC Comics as a production artist. He left that job and continued to hone his skills as an artist. He did some work for Marvel Comics and Warren Magazines. He returned to DC Comics and was assigned to work on the Legion of Super-Heroes. He also drew mini-comics that were inserted in cereal boxes.
