Nieves stared his career with the publication of Tales From the Heart. A related one-shot titled Bloodlines was nominated for two Eisner Awards in 1993.

Nieves has worked for Entropy Enterprises, Slave Labor Graphics, Marvel Comic's label Epic Comics, Marvel Comics, Caliber Comics, Comico Comics and Moonstone Books.

More recent work has been with Dan Dougherty on the Apocalypse Plan from Transfuzion Publishing, a company he co-founded with Gary Reed.
