He was an artist at All-American Publications in the years of the Golden Age; All-American being one of the companies funded by Harry Donenfeld which would eventually merge into the modern DC Comics.
While at All-American, Smith worked on All-American Comics and Flash Comics.
In Flash Comics #3, together with writer Gardnen Fox, he co-created the character of King Standish, later known as The King. In this issue, his signature can be seen on the bottom right panel of the first page of the King story.
In All-American Comics #1, he co-created the characters trio of Red, White and Blue.
