Even as a child, Robert served as a model for his father to draw Little Nemo.

After Winsor McCay's death in 1934, Robert made some attempts to revive the series.

In 1937, he illustrated a Little Nemo strip distributed by a syndicate created by Harry A. Chesler.

After the syndicate closed in 1938, Robert moved the series into comic books, publishing in Cocomalt Comics and Blue Ribbon, published by MLJ Publications (now Archie Comics), Shadow Comics by Streets and Smith, and Red Seal and Punch Comics by the publisher Dynamic (owned by Chester).

Between March and December 1947, Robert relaunched the strip through McCay-Richardson Features Syndicate.
