Yves Huppen was born on March 17, 1967 in Brussels, to a designer father (Hermann) and a mother employed at the national bank, little Yves began to walk... in the footsteps of his father. Because very quickly his parents noticed that he was born with a pencil in his hand. His first years of high school augured a bright future that quickly became disillusioned and brought a clear and definitive answer: the offspring was not made for studies. From then on, he dragged himself year after year until the exit while eyeing a little more towards the cinema every day. It is therefore very logical that once his secondary studies are finished, he enters the IAD (Louvain-la-Neuve) to embark, at least he hopes, on an exceptional career as a filmmaker. This slightly crazy dream fizzled out and after a few months, he understood that studying cinema in Belgium often meant ending up in a final control room on TV. Goodbye to the sweet dreams of Hollywood and the Croisette, hello the hard return to reality. And reality doesn't smell so bad because it smells like comics. He therefore went back to drawing and worked on his technique and his imperfect anatomical knowledge.
He is then called by the duty to serve the mother country, and leaves ten months under the flags in Germany (3A in Werl). On his return to civilian life, he filmed weddings, produced advertising montages and orders of all kinds thanks to his video skills. You have to bring in some money. His dreams of cinema have taken a toll and nasty wrinkles!… To look good, he participates in a few competitions for amateur videographers and wins a prize here and there. Small consolation.
To this meager list of hunts is added one of the biggest frustrations of his young life: in contact with the head coach of the Romanian women's Olympic team, Mr. Octavian Bellu, he receives authorization to shoot a film in the training center of Romanian gymnasts, where the Nadia Comaneci of today and tomorrow are shaped. At the time, Romania was coming out of its terrible Ceausescu years and no camera had ever been authorized to film within the confines of this center. Several televisions including ABC Sports (USA) showed interest in this project but its amateur camera was not enough. He made the rounds of Belgian TVs and there, it was the cold shower. Despite the real interest of ABC and other lesser-known channels, no doors are opening. His beautiful project is forgotten. A few years later, France 3 filmed precisely in this same center, "where no Western camera had ever entered..."
Le Secret des hommes-chiens
Then came the time of the first real comic strip adventure in 1995: Le Secret des hommes-chiens published by Dupuis. First publication, first commercial failure. The blow is hard. He takes the hit. To get back on his feet, he goes back to work and… meets his future wife during one of his many trips to the land of Dracula. After a one-year stay as a couple in Bucharest to be alongside his future half during his last academic year, he married Iocasta and returned with her to settle in Brussels.
The following year, his dad invited him to write a screenplay for him: it would be Liens de Sang. Then, in stride, Rodrigo who is part of the Bois-Maury series. A new collaboration was born and has continued since with multiple one-shots. In 2017, he launched a new western series, Duke, with Hermann.
In 2020, he sees his script for Une nuit de pleine lune to the cinema by Julius Berg with Maddie Williams (Games of Thrones) under the title The Owners.
