In 1971 the FBI created a program called "Wonder Friends" to combat super-powered and/or paranormal criminals. It recruited and trained superheros and coordinated their actions. This group was given a high public profile in order to inspire and give hope to innocent citizens. The group was a great success for most of the decade and had nearly 50 members at its height.

However it was discovered the Wonder Friends' presence only served to increase the amount of super-villain activity, inspiring the more psychopathic or obsessive villains into striking repeatedly for various reasons. As a result, several of the Wonder Friends died in a showdown with Dr. Ex-Mortis and the team was disbanded to be replaced by a new government organization Agency Zero. Most of the surviving Wonder Friends joined this new organization.

• D-Shift: Human who could teleport material to other locations and dimensions.
• The Brass Colossus: Human with ability to turn his skin into super-tough metal and super-strength.
• Sluthie the Wondergirl: Human genius adept with super-gadgets and tech.
• Warrior Princess: Nubian avatar-goddess of battle.
• Justice Beetle: Human who could summon and communicate with beetles.
• Zahk: Robot A.I. with various ranged tech attacks.
