Origin

The Deathless Men army was founded by British secret agent Aylmer Gregson after he and fellow inmates escaped from a German concentration camp. Records show that they died in captivity, but really they survived and formed underground resistance groups throughout German-occupied Europe.

Creation

The Deathless Men are the protagonists in the V for Vengeance series published by DC Thomson. Created by writer KD Frost, they first appeared in The Wizard in 1942.

Team Evolution

Deathless Men wear identical grey suits and masks to conceal the disfigurements inflicted by their Nazi torturers. Each uses the codename ‘Jack’ followed by a number. Each Deathless Man is fanatically committed to their cause and is prepared to commit suicide rather than be taken alive.

Their modus operandi is to target the most evil and sadistic Nazis – the concentration camp commandants, torturers and war criminals – and forewarn them of their death using a vengeance list. Each vengeance list is written in red ink and includes the names of the Deathless Men’s intended victims. Whenever they assassinate a target, the victim’s name is crossed off the list. The final name on the list is Adolf Hitler’s.

The Deathless Men terrorise their enemies using a v-motif. The letter v appears on all their vengeance lists, and they frequently use it as a warning or calling card. For example, by having an aeroplane skywrite it, or by setting a clock tower to 11:05 so the hands form a v shape.

At one point they were renamed the Faceless Men, but later reverted to their original name.
