The Bismollians first appearance was in the pulp comic titled Adventure Comics 303 The Man Who Haunted Superboy!, December 1962. They were created by Leo Dorfman and George Papp.
History
Original Continuity: New Earth
The Bismollians are originally from human colonizers which arrived sometime between the 20th and 30th century. After a few years of their original arrival the new settlers discovered that the soil of the planet Bismoll housed a deadly microbe which was both poisoning them and causing all food stock useless and inedible.
With time the survivors would develop enzymes enabling them to digest and process the organic resource once a poison to them. As time passed the future descendants of the survivors would have the enzyme to mutate further and bestowing the Bismollians with the enhanced ability to eat just about any matter, organic or not. They could do this a s a super-speeded up process of consumption and processing the material at amazing rates.
The Bismollians developed a political system in which citizens would serve office via a draft system. All having a mandated fair chance at holding political office.
Post Zero Hour:
The Bismollians were a race in the lived in the Buffer Planets which was seeded by the Daxamite Valor. This was done after the Dominator War as a preventative measure for any future attacks, as Bismol was between the Dominator and Earth-Gov space.

Matter-Eater-Lad: The Legion of Super-Hero, politician, and business man Tenzil Kim is the best known Bismollian being a star standout due to his personal charm.
Calorie Queen: Once a Legion reject Tryan Loy would gain the power to adapt the energy from what she digested into super strength from her fathers experiments. Becoming an advisor and right hand woman to Tenzil Kim's political career.
Nervosa: Future member of the Legion of Super-Heroes Nervosa was a proud member of her race reveling in her power to consume anything or anyone in a fight.
