The First Guard is one of Earth’s foremost organizations of powered individuals dedicated to safeguarding the world from any and all threats beyond the ability of conventional forces to handle.

In the wake of “The Decimation”, where one in ten super-powered beings had been killed in the line of duty, the United Nations began the lengthy process of establishing a charter for its own group of powered individuals who would operate under, and be answerable only to, its own Security Council. The body already possessed organizations that operated in a more covert capacity, but desired a more forward-facing group it could present to the public at large. After several false starts and failures, the Security Council finally achieved its goal and the group known as the First Guard (named in honor of the organization that first operated during the Second World War) was born.

Consisting of heroes hand-picked from member nations, the group took up residence in the newly-renovated Liberty Plaza in Washington D.C. Liberty Plaza itself had been constructed on the site of the former headquarters of the original First Guard, which had been destroyed during the event known as the “Demon Wars”, and thus had a storied history of its own to contribute.

The founding members of the team consisted of the third American Eagle, and the second Blue Bolt, both of whom were the grandsons of the original First Guard members of those same names. They were joined by Onyx of Israel, the acrobatic Diversion of the United Kingdom, and Aquatica, ambassador of Atlantis. The team then added the time-lost heroes known as The Fighting Yank and his partner The All-American Kid to their roster, the sorceress known as Veil, and the hot-tempered Australian Johnny Sol. In the following years, the membership of the team continued to expand, including many more heroes from around the world.

The First Guard has battled many threats over the years, ranging from terrorist organizations, to the threat of beings like The Chronarch, the android Template, The Pharaoh, and a group of would-be master criminals known as The Crime Phalanx. Most recently, the team was called into action when the thunder god Taranis’ conflict with the dark elf sorceress Valthana Shadowmoon caused the return of the monstrous Fomorian known as Beglog the Snake-Limbed. Taranis joined with The First Guard in battling Beglog and Valthana, and together they eventually prevailed, defeating both. Following this incident, Taranis discovered that he was unable to return home to the mystical realm of Avalorr, and at the encouraging of F.B.I. Agent Simon N. Kirby, joined the First Guard as its newest recruit.

The First Guard continues its mission of peace and defense across the world, and is held in high regard by virtually every nation on Earth. But with the superhuman landscape changing, and more and more powered individuals emerging, it is unknown how the world, and the United States in particular, will react to this change in the status quo.
