The Dragyern were created by Kelly Thompson and Meredith McClaren in Black Cloak 7.

Major Story Arcs

General History

The Dragyern are a large race of beings similar to dragons. The Dracona, a class of sentient humanoids, are also apparently related to dragons. It is unknown if there are any remaining dragons in Kiros but the Dragyern are thought to be either extinct or mythical, so presumably the same is true about dragons. An exhibit about Dragyern in the Kiros Museum of Natural History treats their status as either fact or fiction as unknown. One of the few known facts is that an ancestor of Jono the Raiju fought one during the last wars.

Dragyern are semi-sentient. They are attracted to light and tunnel though the ground, making their way from one place to the next without people seeing them. The evidence of this tunneling is known as Dragyern Sign.

They are very durable, being immune or resistant to Black Cloak handguns. They can hold their breath for a long time.

Dragyern Arc

Elea Veris, one of the Kiros Three, makes plans to develop a form of synthetic magic to take the place of the magic that the city had previously taken from the Taka. To cover up her plans, she has to have several people killed. To do this, she kidnaps a few highly-sensitive magic users, including Dagmar Solas. She then forces them to use their magic to control a small group of Dragyern, who she sends to kill the necessary people.

These Dragyern break into the target’s houses from underneath, tear them apart, and leave, leaving a mysterious set of traces that the police initially can’t interpret. Then Theron II of Pax and Beeane II of Alden enlist Phaedra Essex to work on the case.

They go back to one of the crime scenes and encounter one of the Dragyern, which had come back to look for something. Alden tricks it into running away to chase after a light.

They run into another one that has been lurking around after killing a journalist, Ellyse Locke. The Black Cloaks swim to her house but are chased by the Dragyern. Sashenka and Phaedra try to keep it off but it follows them into the house. There, Dagmar, who has escaped Elea’s imprisonment, knocks it out with a spell.

In another attack, a Dragyern carries off Lysanthir, a magician that Elea thinks can help her with the synthetic magic, from the Kiros Supermax prison.

Later, the Black Cloaks find Elea. They try to arrest her but she has some of the other magic handlers use other Dragyern to attack. They do, but then the heroes are able to free the handlers and the Dragyern attack and kill Elea.

Some Taka, which are also semi-sentient magic creatures, are there and feel a bond with the Dragyern.
