Warguard
Former scientists and personnel aboard the Monitor-One space station, those who became the WarGuard were exposed to highly volatile radiation from a passing comet that damaged the station. They survived, were mutated and gained phenomenal powers, which drove them mad. It took StormWatch Prime and an army to put them into cryogenic suspension. The United Nations kept them frozen to use as a last strike option should the Earth be threatened by an overwhelming force.
A select few scientists like Jackson King's father (called afterthat Despot), who had managed to survive the initial disaster were changed somehow and went on to become the powerful but uncontrollable Warguard. Hundred of more lives were lost trying to put them in protective stasis for the safety of all mankind.
