Origin

The agents of Black Spectre appeared by the first time in Daredevil#108, in which they hired the Beetle to steal certain government plates for them. Daredevil interfered in Beetle's scheme, only to see the plates taken anyway by Black Spectre's own agents, who actually just used the Beetle as a distraction.

Soon after, Daredevil's then girlfriend Black Widow was kidnapped by the organization and brainwashed to work for them. Trying to investigate Black Spectre's real goals, Daredevil discovered that their leader was Mandrill, a criminal mutant who was using his pheromones to control women and make them work for Black Spectre. Mandrill intended to use his group to overthrow the government of United States and start a reign of chaos.

Black Spectre as a group demonstrated to be a difficult challenge to Daredevil, even with the aid of Shanna the She-Devil and the Thing. Not only was Mandrill a skillfull fighter, but he also had the help of Nekra and Silver Samurai who were competent and dangerous opponents themselves.

Creation

The organisation Black Spectre were created by writer Steve Gerber and artist Bob Brown. They first appeared in the story "Cry Beetle!" in Daredevil #108 (Mar. 1974).
