Ed, Toby, Vic and Mills served their country and fought in the Vietnam War until they were caught in a blast of Napalm and horribly disfigured.  Years later, unable to find jobs due to their scarred faces, the Demons of Liberation made masks designed from their faces and set out to force  people to be aware of what Vietnam Veterans had gone through. 
 
Mills had them kidnap his sister, Sybil, and attempt to ransom her, but during the plight, she overpowered one of them and ran into the swamp.  Angry and concerned for his sister, he had the Demons search the swamp.  The next day they found her in the company of Richard Rory and the

Man-Thing,

and after a useless battle, they gave up.  Mills revealed himself, sobbing that they never wanted to hurt anyone, just make everyone understand .
