Origin
The monster team known as S.T.A.K.E. officialy started with the name the Howling Commandos, a homage to the World War II team of Nick Fury. It consisted of a number of supernatural beings that were recruted by the global peacekeeping organization S.H.I.E.L.D.
Creation
The team was created by Keith Giffen and Eduardo Francisco and first appeared in Nick Fury's Howling Commandos issue 1 (2005). The team was originaly known as the Howling Commandos, a homage to the original World War Two team, but has since been known as the organization S.T.A.K.E.
Major Story Arcs
Beginnings
In the beginning, the team of monsters were recruted to stop extraterrestrial threats around the world. Their leader was Clay Quartermain. The team did a number of missions before eventually disbanding.
The New Team
A few months later, S.H.I.E.L.D.'s monster team was started again, this time renamed "Supernatural Threat Analysis and Kill Experts." The team was led by the recently returned-from-the-dead Dum Dum Dugan.
