Origin

After the New Warriors took on villains that they were ill-equipped to handle, Standford, CT was destroyed in a nuclear-like explosion. To get the superheroes a semblance of checks and balances, Tony Star sponsored the Super-Hero Registration Act, which would require all superheroes to work for the government. Part of the act was the establishment of the 50-State Initiative, where each of the U.S. states would receive their own version of the Avengers, with heroes trained by former and active Avengers. The Calvary was assigned to Georgia.

Creation

The Cavalry was created by Dan Slott, Christos N. Gage and Steve Kurth in 2008 and first appeared in Avengers: The Initiative # 18.

Major Story Arcs

Secret Invasion

One of the Initiative's biggest challenges was the secret invasion of Skrulls. Many of them took the form of superheroes so they were planted across all the teams. Calvary member, Thor Girl, was one. She was found out by 3-D Man, who has a special pair of goggles, the only gadget that can see the Skrulls' true nature.

Members of the team would join the largest assembly of Initiative cadets and veteran heroes in Central Park to fight the last wave of Skrull troops. After the victory, the replaced heroes, including Thor Girl, were found on a Skrull spaceship.

Ragnarok

Ragnarok, the clone of Thor created by The Initiative, went crazy and started attacking Camp Hammond, while members of the Cavalry were there. Thor Girl was receiving counseling for PTSD she developed as a Skrull hostage, and Ultragirl was there dealing with legal issues regarding the Ms. Marvel costume she was gifted by Carol Danvers. Red 9, a newly graduated cadet, had also just been given his assignment to the team. They all joined the other heroes fighting him off, eventually destroying much of Camp Hammond.

In the aftermath, Ultragirl quits The Initiative.

Fear Itself

After the fall of Norman Osborn as leader of SHIELD and The Initiative, Ultragirl returned to The Cavalry, just as enchanted hammers started falling from the sky. Commander Steve Rogers asks Prodigy to gather heroes on a volunteer basis to help keep the peace and lead a new Initiative where there is no forced conscription or registration. Prodigy agrees to become the leader of the new Initiative and most of the former Initiative teams gather in Washington DC, including The Calvary.

They were sent to Atlanta to help quell the riots, but Thor Girl was mistaken for one of the hammer users. Police opened fire, and she mistakenly deflected a bullet, hitting one of the cops. Prodigy asked that Thor Girl cooperate. He initially defends her to the press, but he still has her locked up just in case. This angers some of the cadets who trained with her. Cloud 9 helped her escape, but growing more and more disappointed with the reactions from other heroes, she determines they are still unworthy and leaves for her home planet.
