The Monsters are creatures that seem to cause the Gloom and attack anything that isn’t taken over by it. Some of the larger monsters are called Behemoths; Cleaners, creatures that seem to be in hazmat suits, function as the eyes of the Veratu and keep everything running; and the Veratu are the leaders.

The Veratu were surprised that Donna stayed mostly black and white but started to gain color; she was the first one ever to do so. They wanted to capture her and send the monsters to the camp to do so. They didn’t succeed in getting Donna because Raina saved her, however they did capture Raina. When the team came to rescue those that the Monsters captured the Monsters let them come, under orders from the Veratu who wanted to completely crush the group. Donna and Raina’s Band all ran inside as the Monsters fought the other Bands on the outside. The Queen, a nearly building sized Monster, attacked the other Bands and killed a few of their members. As Raina and the others tried to escape the Veratu showed up to stop them. As the other camp members escaped the Veratu attacked, breaking through Kenji’s energy barrier and attacking the Band who were trapped with it. Kenji, Raina and Luke were all injured as it attacked and tried to get to Donna. Donna was the first person, other than children, to get away from the Gloom herself and it wanted to know how. As they speak Donna shot it enough to distract it as Raina used her Bass to kill it.

The other Bands managed to kill the Queen at a heavy loss of their own members.

The Veratu said that humans gave their freedom up to the Monsters long ago and were provided with security, simplicity and wealth in return. They seem to be attempting to return to “Acropolis” although it is unknown what Acropolis is.
