Trevor Tambling has been an active mercenary for over two decades. Nick Fury Sr. used to hire him for instances when SHIELD couldn't get the job done.

Doom's Shadow
Following Doctor Doom's deposing as Sorcerer Supreme and World Emperor, the United Nations passed the Superhuman Borders Act, which stopped anyone with superpowers or advanced technology from entering Latveria to help stop the civil unrest. Fury used this opportunity to create a new SHIELD task force of enhanced soldiers, which were exempted from the Superhuman Borders Act. This included Tambling.
He was made a member of a task force led by Captain America to covertly enter Latveria and secure Doom's secret weapon. When Cap found evidence of a mass grave that Latverian revolutionary, Salvation, was responsible for, Cap led some of his team after him. Tambling stuck to the mission along with Red Widow, fellow SHIELD agent, looking for the secret weapon. When the two found a case supposedly containing the weapon, Widow killed Tambling to take credit for delivering the weapon to Salvation, betraying SHIELD.
