Imperial Japanese Army
The Imperial Japanese Army formed the ground-based military forces of the Empire of Japan from 1867 to 1945 when the force dissolved. A much smaller successor was created in 1947. The force was involved in the Pacific War (1937 - 1945) where it gained a reputation for atrocities and brutal behavior to prisoners of war and non-Japanese civilians. Records indicate the soldiers themselves experienced extremely harsh treatment from their superiors.
