Origin

Gabi's father left before she was born and her young mother often left her in the care of her grandmother Mama Rosa, who raised Gabi in a strict but loving manner. When Gabi's older sister Fern died of cancer, Gabi became more rebellious and got in trouble with the law.

All these things combined to make Gabi an angry and troubled girl, and these led to Gabi unwittingly manifesting the Duplicitype monster that killed her family.

Creation

Gabi was created by James Tynion IV and Werther Dell'Edera for their series Something is Killing the Children. Gabi was one of the focal points for their story arcs The Road to Tribulation, The Girl and the Hurricane and Showdown at Easy Creek Corral.

Major Story Arcs

Road to Tribulation

Gabi's family has been murdered by what she can only describe as faceless monster, and she currently has found herself in the back seat of Sheriff Carter's patrol car. Carter takes Gabi to Luck of the Irish, so that Riqui, Fern's former girlfriend, can watch Gabi while Carter tries to figure out what is happening.

Gabi freaks out on Carter, attacks the sheriff and runs out in the parking lot to cry. That is where she meets Erica Slaughter for the first time. Erica freaks Gabi out more by asking her questions about the monster and Gabi runsaway again, this time back into the bar, to tell Riqui and Carter about the strange woman in the parking lot.

That night Gabi watches Erica break into the house where her family was killed, and the next morning she breaks in as well. There she finds Octo, who talks to her and convicnces her to follow the trail of the Duplicitype.

She finds the monster in the spa eating dead children, and it looks like it is going to eat her too, but Erica shows up. Gabi watches helplessly while the Duplicitype attacks Erica, but for some reason it runs off, leaving Erica badly injured.

The Girl and the Hurricane

The next day Gabi is staying with Riqui's family, and plays cards with Johnny, Riqui's little brother, but when he leaves to get his Xbox, Gabi overhears Erica talking to Octo, that this new hunter, Cutter, is going to kill Erica and everyone she knows.

Later when Riqui returns from work, Gabi goes with her and Erica to see Carter, who arrests Erica and locks up Gabi and Riqui. Riqui thinks this for the best, but then realizes thing have gone from bad to worse when Cutter shows up and kills the officers.

After they escape the station, Gabi learns the both Octo and Dolly are evil and just want to kill children. She also learns that she is the only thing Erica can use as bait to catch the Duplicitype and she is okay with that, because she is the girl in the hurricane.

Showdown at Easy Creek Caroll

Erica, Riqui and Gabi hide out at the Easy Creek Caroll, trying to hide from Cutter and luring the Duplicitype to them, but Cutter finds them first. While Erica and Riqui are outside dealing with the monster, Cutter catches Gabi and uses her as a human shield.

When Erica rages at the former monster hunter, Cutter stabs Gabi with a poison arrow, dooming the young girl to a painful death. Gabi breaks free and Erica kills Cutter.

Knowing that she is going to die, and that Erica can't kill the monster, Gabi allows the monster to biter her hand off, and ingest the poison. The monster dies, and Gabi bleeds out in Erica's arm, knowing she was a hero.
