Mad Scientist
The mad scientist is a stock character of a scientist who is perceived as "mad, bad and dangerous to know" or "insane" owing to a combination of unusual or unsettling personality traits and the unabashedly ambitious, taboo or hubristic nature of their experiments. Popular in literature, movies, TV shows, and of course comic books.
Marvel -1 Flashback Month
In July 1997, Marvel Comics released #-1 issues of most of its comic volumes in an event dubbed Flashback Month. These issues were meant to showcase untold tales from their characters origins. Titles involved in the "Heroes Reborn" event did not participate in the Flashback Month.
Marvel Noir
In 2009, Marvel came out with a good amount of comic books with the "Noir" theme, taking many of their superheroes and placing them in the 1930's. The Noir story-lines remained pretty similar to the character's originals, adding many of their already supporting cast, but there were often unforeseen twists and variants from the original.
